  • Weekly #forestpark #pdx update: Kinda miserable for trail running, tbh. The leaves were pasted to the trail with mud and the canopy above was just letting all the rain through.

Plenty of solitude and foggy views. Very #silentsunday themed.

I just wanted a hot shower and warm house afterwards.

A narrow muddy trail curves uphill through a foggy forest. Bare moss-covered trees rise into a pale gray sky, and clusters of yellow leaves and wet ferns line the sides of the path. The scene looks damp, quiet, and muted by mist.

  • Another sunny day for a trail run in #forestpark #pdx! This is my typical view. The dog can run much faster than me. At this point I’m hoping the rains stay away for a few more weekends.

View from behind a black-and-white dog on a blue leash walking up a leaf-covered forest trail. Golden and green foliage glows in the sunlight, and the path curves gently uphill through tall autumn trees.

  • You know you’re getting old when your favorite bands start performing with the symphony. That said, this was a fantastic show.

My only regret about the picture is that Jenny Conlee got cut out and her enthusiasm was one of the best parts of the show. #decemberists #pdx #concert #oregonsymphony

On stage at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, the Decemberists perform with the Oregon Symphony. Lead singer Colin Meloy, wearing a blue suit, sits at the very edge of the stage under a bright white spotlight, holding a microphone and gesturing with one hand toward the audience. Behind him, the orchestra fills the stage, with rows of string players, brass, and percussion lit in deep blue. The band’s instruments—a piano, upright bass, drum set, and guitars—are arranged across the front. The ornate theater interior glows with soft blue light, highlighting its carved details and gold accents. Audience members are visible in the foreground, watching attentively.

  • Same trail, ten minutes apart. It was nice to have the atmospheric river dry up for a little bit, but most of my time in #forestpark #pdx looked like the first picture.

A misty forest path (Leif Erikson) winds through the green trees of Forest Park with fallen leaves scattered along the ground. The same trail as the first picture (Leif Erikson), but with dappled sunlight filtering through the forest canopy and no more mist.

  • It’s been a while! Today started off as extremely rainy, which left the forest floor pretty muddy and wet. But the view above was really nice! Even though we’re well into autumn there is still a ton of green in the trees. #pdx #forestpark

  • So, I got to hang out with Caesar the No Drama Llama the other day. I don’t think it can be a bad day if you get to hug a #llama on said day. What a sweet creature!

  • Another mollusk picture from #forestpark in #pdx this week. I stopped my run to see a banana #slug crossing a little bridge next to me.

There was some kind of trail race today happening in the park. It looked like fun! The slug was thankfully not on the course.

  • I saw this snail on my weekend #ForestPark #pdx outing and figure I’d take a picture looking down for once. Much prettier than the banana slugs!

A close-up photograph of a snail on a damp, earthy surface. The snail has a shiny, spiraled shell with rich brown and golden-yellow bands. Its body is dark and textured, with two visible tentacles extended forward. The surrounding ground is a mix of dirt, small sticks, and scattered leaves.

  • Still mostly avoiding the social media world darkness but at least I made it into the forest this weekend. I was hoping to get some wildflower views but settled for the usual spot - thankfully there were a few wildflowers up there!

  • I was about five minutes away from leaving for Timberline Lodge when I got a text incidentally mentioning that the conditions were terrible up there today. This made me wonder: where is the best place to get real time info about ski/snowboard conditions? Forecasts are easy to misinterpret.

Screenshot of conditions at Timberline Lodge for 30-December 2024. The text: 30° snow/rain mix. Current weather conditions are 30°F with a mix of snow and rain, parking lots are full, Timberline Road is closed, and lifts will operate from 9am to 4pm, with night skiing available from December 25 to January 4.

  • This is a great YouTube video exposing how Honey (by PayPal) stole affiliate links from YouTubers and then also just failed to do what it promised for their users in the first place. I always felt a little squicked out when I heard a YouTuber or podcaster with them as a sponsor.

  • Happy Turkey Day for those celebrating. I’m spending some time as a sous chef and watching the #mst3k Turkey Day Marathon

    Right now: Hobgoblins!

  • Absolutely miserable outside today in #ForestPark in Portland - just constant cold rain and muddy trails. Still, sometimes you go around a bend and look up and it might be worth it.

  • Forest Park in #Portland by mid-November. We’re properly in the cold wet fall. It’s up to the ferns and the conifers to keep things green through the winter.

This image captures a forest trail during late autumn or early winter. The narrow, dirt path winds uphill, bordered by damp, fallen leaves and lush green ferns. The surrounding trees are mostly bare, with a few still clinging to yellowing leaves. The tall, slender trunks create an open canopy against a cloudy gray sky. The ground and foliage appear wet, suggesting recent rain. The scene is peaceful and natural, evoking a cool, damp forest ambiance.

  • Other things to think about rather than impending doom: New social networks and POSSE - the idea that you should post on your own site and syndicate everywhere. Important these days when we can’t really trust any server. I chose micro.blog for my host, and this post goes to multiple sites.

  • Things I’m doing to stop thinking about impending doom for a bit: watching Frieren with my kid. Imagine if your D&D campaign ended 89 years ago and a character was still reminiscing about those times, and put it in a gorgeous setting. It’s fantastic.

  • More Forest Park October magic here in #Portland. The sun through the high canopies was giving a distinct Lothlorian vibe this late morning. This was taken on Wildwood trail, not too far from Birch Trail.

  • Yesterday I discovered that the remodeled #pdx airport has a little section devoted to the Tiny Chef show! I don’t think they shoot it here in Portland any longer but I think it was here for a while!

  • Another Forest Park update from #Portland. Fall is definitely showing up now! The trails are now sided with fallen leaves and there are far less worries about hot days. This view is from Nature Trail, between Wildwood and Leif.

  • Forest Park update: it still feels like summer is hanging by a thread here. Despite the cooler weather, the leaves don’t seem to be ready to drop for a bit. It was noticeably emptier with the #Portland Marathon happening!

  • Ok, I kicked Wordpress to the curb and I’m trying out micro.blog as a simpler/cheaper home base. The nice thing is that it seems to support cross-posting, but we’ll see what kind of features make it through to Mastodon and Bsky.
